Hungary Becomes Independent
Hungary was the first country to take down the Iron Curtain in 1989, when they finally became a democracy. The Iron Curtain was established after World War II, and separated Europe into two sides. Hungary was the first country to become a democracy, embracing a western-style. In September of 1989, Hungary became independent of the Soviet Union, establishing the Republic of Hungary.
